The final model presented a high predictive power of Self-Esteem (R2 =. The sample was composed of 474 undergraduate students with a mean age of 19 years. In this study, we explore a structural equation model of Time Perspective’s association with Self-Esteem. It was proposed that it is related to selfesteem, though until now the main approach when exploring this relation was correlational. Time Perspective is the process by which people categorize, archive and recover personal and social experiences through temporal frames (past, present, and future), influencing various aspects of human behaviour and cognition. A balanced time perspective is associated with higher well-being and wisdom across the adult age span. Further, both midlife and younger adults were more likely to have a balanced time perspective relative to older adults. Younger adults tended to be more future oriented relative to older adults while older adults tended to be more past oriented relative to younger adults. Results indicated that a balanced time perspective uniquely predicted both mental health and wisdom even after controlling for demographic, physical health, and personality variables. Participants completed a measure of balanced time perspective, mental health, and wisdom. Participants consisted of 512 Dutch adults ranging in age from 17 – 92 years (Mage = 46.46, SD = 21.37), including 186 male and 326 females. We investigate one under examined area of temporal orientation, namely a balanced time perspective, in a large, lifespan sample from the Netherlands. Despite the centrality of time to the aging process, the well-being consequences of different temporal orientations for optimal aging are poorly understood. The past negative register, which indicates rumination, tells us about the importance of considering the psychological experience of time in order to improve the QoL of patients. They corroborate earlier findings on the relationship between TP and QoL associated with other pathologies. Conclusions These results suggest the importance of considering TP as a determinant of psychological QoL. Past-negative time perspective seemed to have a deleterious impact, while a Presenthedonistic time perspective predicted a better QoL, and this was irrespective of the level of severity of the disease. Regression analyses revealed that records of Past-negative and Present-hedonistic perspectives predicted QoL. ![]() Results Correlational analyses illustrated the links between TP and QoL. Methods Data were collected from 156 patients who completed a questionnaire comprising a generic measure (SF-12) and a specific measure (Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire) of QoL, a measure of TP (ZTPI) and a collection of socio-demographic and medical data. Our goal is to explore the links between QoL and time perspective (TP) and the role of TP as a determinant of QoL. Purpose Numerous studies have shown the impact of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) on patient quality of life (QoL), but no research has yet examined the impact of time’s experience in the assessment of QoL in IBD. ![]()
